The Slovak National Museum (SNM) is the top governmental institution in the area of museum activity in the Slovak Republic. It gathers, documents, professionally processes, scientifically elaborates, safe-guards, enables access to and utilizes for public interest collectible items which serve as evidence of the development of Slovak society and nature. It fulfills the roles connected with the creation, registration and protection of collections; it presents the collections locally and abroad and it executes other forms of museum communication. It solves scientific and research questions and publishes the results via its own publishing effort. The SNM also fulfills the function of coordinator, methodologist and professional counselor, statistics keeper and educator/informant for the whole museum scope of the Slovak Republic.

A public archive and a sciences library are also a part of the SNM. Hundreds of objects, including national cultural landmark areas are under its administration.
